  • The general election candidates for the Chorley Constituency

The general election candidates for the Chorley Constituency

With a combination of factors currently influencing the mortgage market, the imminent General Election being one of them, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at who will be standing locally.

In no particular order, they are: Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Mark Brexit-Smith, an independent candidate and James Melling for the Green Party.

The seat is currently held by Lord Hoyle who has recently been elected as the 158th Speaker of the House of Commons.

It is a tradition for no main party to put forward a candidate in the constituency that’s represented by the Commons Speaker.

Yet, as is so often the case in politics these days, there were some surprises in store.

The Conservatives, Labour, Lib Dems and the Brexit Party have all honoured the tradition and refrained from putting anyone forward. So, how is it that Sir Lindsay isn’t standing alone and what do we know about the three Chorley candidates?

Sir Lindsay Hoyle

The first thing we know about Sir Lindsay Hoyle is that we like the company he keeps. If you take a look at the picture below, you’ll see what we mean.

The Bolton Wanderers FC fan was born and still lives in Lancashire. A former textiles printing businessperson, he was first elected as MP for Chorley in 1997.

Mark Brexit-Smith

Chorley’s former Brexit Party candidate is standing as an “independent Brexiteer”. His name is no coincidence. He changed it to prove his dedication to the cause. Instead of sitting the election out as a member of the Brexit Party, he announced his intention to run in early November.

James Melling

James Melling felt that the tradition made things “unfair” and is standing to “give the people of Chorley a choice”.

One thing is for sure – the General Election is set for 12 December and it looks to be an interesting one for Chorley.
